How Ciprofloxacin Stops Susceptible Bacteria

Ciprofloxacin is bactericidal. It interferes with bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes needed for DNA replication, repair and cell division. Susceptible bacteria cannot maintain these processes and are killed.

Serious Fluoroquinolone Reactions

Commonly reported reactions include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and rash. Ciprofloxacin can also cause severe diarrhea related to Clostridioides difficile, abnormal blood glucose, liver injury, sensitivity to sunlight, QT-interval prolongation and rare severe allergic reactions.

Cipro side effects that require medical attention can occur early and may affect more than one body system. Risk of tendon injury is higher in adults over 60, transplant recipients and people taking corticosteroids, but tendon damage can occur without these factors.

Stop ciprofloxacin and contact a healthcare professional immediately for tendon pain or swelling, new burning, tingling, numbness or weakness, or serious central nervous system symptoms; seek urgent or emergency care for a tendon snap or loss of movement, trouble breathing, severe allergic symptoms, seizures, or rapidly worsening muscle weakness, especially with myasthenia gravis.

Do not exercise an affected tendon. Tendon rupture can occur during treatment or months afterward, and peripheral nerve symptoms may become permanent. Patients with myasthenia gravis may experience dangerous worsening of muscle weakness.
