Cardiac rehabilitation is a professionally supervised program to help people recover from heart attacks and/or other coronary interventions such as stenting, angioplasty, bypass surgery, valve repair or replacement. A doctor must refer patients to the program. It consists of a tailored physical activity program with continuous ECG monitoring, as well as monitoring oxygen levels, blood pressures, and rates of perceived exertion. It also assesses risk factors and provides education and counseling to reduce risk factors to lower the risk of future problems. This includes meeting with a dietician to create a healthy eating plan, education on reducing risk factors like smoking, weight control, and stress. Each program is tailored to the patient’s needs and may vary in length from 2 weeks to 3months or longer.
