Patients without a current prescription may select a $20 online medical consultation with Cody R. Christensen, DO, where available. The consultation does not guarantee that amoxicillin will be prescribed. The clinician must first determine whether the illness is likely to be caused by susceptible bacteria.

Prescription, medical and account information is handled according to the Sweetwater Medical Center Privacy Statement.

Amoxil contain amoxicillin, a penicillin-class antibiotic used for selected bacterial infections. The tablets are available in 500 mg and 875 mg strengths, allowing the prescriber to choose a dosing interval and total daily amount appropriate for the infection and its severity.

Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from building and maintaining a functional protective cell wall. It does not treat influenza, viral sore throat, the common cold or another illness caused by a virus.

Patients comparing amoxicillin 500 mg tablets and amoxicillin 875 mg tablets should use the strength written on the prescription. The larger tablet is not automatically more effective and should not be substituted by changing the number of tablets without approval from the prescriber or pharmacist.

Sweetwater Medical Center displays product and price information and routes the order request. It does not independently diagnose the infection, choose the antibiotic, validate the prescription, guarantee inventory, dispense Amoxil or ship the finished medication.

Amoxicillin Tablet Prices Without Insurance

The amoxicillin tablets price without insurance depends on the prescribed strength, quantity, pharmacy and available discount terms. Generic tablets are usually less expensive than original branded Amoxil and are commonly dispensed when the prescription permits substitution.

A 500 mg prescription may use a different tablet count and dosing frequency from an 875 mg prescription. The total package price therefore does not show which treatment is less expensive unless the prescribed daily amount and course length are also considered.

The packages displayed above are retail price references rather than recommended course lengths. Antibiotic quantities should reflect the diagnosed infection and authorized treatment duration, not a lower price per tablet obtained by purchasing an unnecessarily large supply.

Infections Treated With Amoxil Tablets

Amoxicillin prevents susceptible bacteria from completing the final stages of cell-wall production. Without a stable wall, the bacteria become unable to survive. The effect depends on the organism being sensitive to amoxicillin; bacteria that produce certain resistance enzymes may require another antibiotic.

Amoxil tablets may be prescribed for susceptible bacterial infections involving:

  • Ear, nose and throat infections, including selected bacterial sinus, middle-ear and throat infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible organisms
  • Genitourinary tract infections
  • Skin and skin-structure infections
  • Helicobacter pylori infection as part of a multi-drug eradication regimen
  • Dental infections when an antibiotic is clinically required and the likely bacteria are susceptible

Amoxicillin is not automatically the correct treatment for sinus pressure, sore throat, ear pain or toothache. These symptoms may have viral, inflammatory or structural causes, and a dental abscess may require drainage, root-canal treatment or extraction in addition to, or instead of, an antibiotic.

Amoxil Tablet Dosage

The prescriber selects the tablet strength and interval according to the infection site, severity, likely organism, patient age and kidney function. The same 500 mg tablet can be used in different regimens, so the tablet strength alone does not establish how often it should be taken.

Clinical situation Example labeled adult tablet regimen Practical context
Mild or moderate ear, nose, throat, skin or genitourinary infection 500 mg every 12 hours The prescriber may choose another labeled interval depending on the full treatment plan
Severe ear, nose, throat, skin or genitourinary infection 875 mg every 12 hours or 500 mg every 8 hours Severity and bacterial susceptibility influence the regimen
Lower respiratory tract infection 875 mg every 12 hours or 500 mg every 8 hours Used only when amoxicillin is appropriate for the suspected or identified organism
Helicobacter pylori eradication Total amoxicillin dose of 1,000 mg at each scheduled administration Amoxicillin is combined with other prescribed medicines and is not used alone
Severe renal impairment Individualized dose or longer interval The 875 mg tablet should not be used when the glomerular filtration rate is below the labeled threshold

The regimens in this table summarize labeled adult dosing patterns and are not personal instructions. The pharmacy label remains the controlling instruction for the patient’s prescribed course.

Taking the Tablets Correctly

Amoxicillin may generally be taken with or without food. Taking a dose with food can reduce stomach discomfort for some patients. Doses should be spaced as evenly as practical, swallowed with water and continued for the duration selected by the clinician.

When a dose is missed, it is usually taken when remembered unless the next scheduled dose is close. Two doses should not be taken together merely to compensate for a missed tablet.

Amoxicillin in Helicobacter pylori Treatment

Amoxicillin has a distinct role in treatment intended to eradicate Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with peptic ulcer disease. In this setting, amoxicillin is not prescribed as a stand-alone antibiotic.

The labeled regimens combine a total amoxicillin dose of 1 gram with acid-suppressing treatment and, depending on the regimen, another antibiotic. Because the available tablets contain 500 mg or 875 mg, the exact number and strength used must match the complete prescribed combination.

Patients should not attempt to recreate an H. pylori regimen using leftover amoxicillin tablets. Successful eradication depends on the full combination, timing, duration and follow-up plan.

Penicillin Allergy, Amoxicillin Rash and Mononucleosis

A history of a serious reaction to amoxicillin, another penicillin or a related beta-lactam antibiotic can make Amoxil unsafe. The clinician needs to know whether the previous event involved mild digestive discomfort, a delayed rash, hives, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, anaphylaxis or a severe skin reaction.

Immediate allergic reactions may include hives, wheezing, throat tightness, facial swelling, dizziness or collapse. Severe delayed reactions can involve blistering or peeling skin, painful mouth sores, fever or involvement of internal organs.

Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, faintness or a rapidly progressing blistering rash requires urgent medical care.

Amoxicillin commonly causes a widespread rash when given to a patient with infectious mononucleosis. Because a sore throat, fever and swollen lymph nodes can be caused by mononucleosis rather than streptococcal infection, the diagnosis may need to be reconsidered before an Amoxil prescription is issued.

Digestive Side Effects and Serious Antibiotic Reactions

Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and rash are among the more commonly reported adverse effects. Mild stomach symptoms may improve during treatment, but persistent vomiting can prevent the patient from absorbing scheduled doses and maintaining hydration.

Amoxicillin can alter normal intestinal bacteria and allow Clostridioides difficile to multiply. Significant watery diarrhea, blood in the stool, abdominal cramping or fever may occur during treatment or after the course has ended.

Drug-induced enterocolitis syndrome has also been reported with amoxicillin. It can produce repetitive vomiting and other systemic symptoms several hours after a dose, sometimes without the hives or breathing symptoms typical of an immediate allergy.

Severe diarrhea, repeated vomiting, dehydration, blood in the stool, seizure activity or a serious skin reaction requires medical assessment rather than self-treatment with leftover medicines.

Kidney Function, Interactions and Laboratory Tests

Amoxicillin is removed substantially through the kidneys. Severe renal impairment can allow higher drug concentrations to persist and may require a lower dose or a longer interval between tablets. The 875 mg tablet is not appropriate below the renal-function threshold specified in the prescribing information.

Medication review is especially important with:

  • Warfarin or another anticoagulant requiring coagulation monitoring
  • Allopurinol, which may increase the likelihood of a skin rash
  • Probenecid, which can increase and prolong amoxicillin concentrations
  • Other antibacterial medicines that may change the intended treatment strategy

Amoxicillin can also affect certain laboratory test results. Patients should tell the clinician and laboratory staff that they are taking it when blood or urine testing is performed.

Amoxil and Amoxicillin-Clavulanate Are Different Medicines

Amoxil contains amoxicillin alone. Amoxicillin-clavulanate combines amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, an ingredient that blocks some bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes. The combination is commonly known by the reference brand Augmentin.

The medicines are not interchangeable based only on the amoxicillin number shown on the label. A tablet labeled 875/125 mg contains both amoxicillin and clavulanate, while an Amoxil 875 mg tablet contains amoxicillin alone.

Clavulanate may extend activity against certain resistant bacteria, but it can also change the adverse-effect profile and dosing considerations. The prescriber chooses between the products based on the infection and expected susceptibility rather than assuming the combination is always stronger or better.

Medical Disclaimer
